Mary Shertzer

Mary Patricia Shertzer, 88, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at the Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care. Born March 17,1931, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Amy (Carabine) Monahan. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and brother, Edward Monahan. Mary Pat was a 1949 graduate of Catholic Girls Central and she attended nursing school at Sacred Heart Hospital. She worked for Dr. Bernie Coberly, Sr. in Mt. Savage. Mary Pat was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Mountains Parish. She was a member of the Sodality and was actively involved with the St. Patrick's School PTA. Mary Pat took her greatest joy in family life, especially her grandchildren. She was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and Duke basketball. Mary Pat is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Zamagias and husband, Jim, Cumberland, and Rosemary Dicks and husband, Michael, Cumberland. She is also survived by grandchildren, Stephen Zamagias and wife, Dixie, Athens, Georgia, and Elizabeth Rogerson and husband Scott, Pittsburgh. She is also survived by great grandchildren Charlotte and Colette Rogerson. Other survivors include step granddaughter, Christine Dicks, Cresaptown, sister-in-law Carolyn Monahan, Stafford, VA, brother-in-law James Shertzer and wife, Judy, Frostburg. She is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family especially thanks caregiver Etta Helmstetter, the staff at the Lions Center, the 6th floor staff at the Western Maryland Health System, and all her friends at the Cumberland Arms. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A. 60 West Main Street, Frostburg, on Sunday, September 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Mt. Savage, Monday, at 10 a.m. Internment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Mt. Savage. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Pat's favorite charities, Bishop Walsh School or Susan G. Komen Center for Breast Cancer.
