With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Clyde William Stewart, Jr. (Bill), who died peacefully at home on July 20, 2025 at the age of 77.
Bill, a devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife of 48 years, Twylah Mae (Murphy) Stewart, daughters, Sarah Jeanne Kra and husband Dominique of Davenport, Florida, and Rebecca Anne Hohing and husband, Ryan of Cumberland, Maryland. Bill was also the proud grandfather of Safiah, Jack, and Simah, and uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde William and Jeanne Cooper Stewart, and sister, Lucy Lynne Stewart White.
Bill spent his formative years in the Tidewater region as a proud Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and embraced the values of leadership, community service, and civic responsibility that would continue throughout his life.
Following his family’s proud military tradition, Bill served honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Army, both active and reserves, from 1967-1977, including a tour of duty in Korea.
After his military service, Bill earned a BA in History from Old Dominion University in 1974 and M.Ed. in Counseling from Frostburg State University in 1977.
During his time at FSU, Bill worked at the University Police Department, rising from a part-time employee to the rank of Captain with 35 years of dedicated service. His calm demeanor and thoughtful decision-making earned the trust and admiration of his colleagues across the campus.
For more than four decades, Bill volunteered alongside his wife Twylah, spending countless hours in service to the local community. He was a First Responder with the Frostburg Ambulance, co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 96, and volunteer pit-crew parent with the Allegany High School Band. He was an usher and choir member with the Cresaptown United Methodist Church and volunteered with the Interfaith Community Food Pantry. He was a proud member of Mountain Lodge #99, the Ali Ghan Shrine, and American Legion Post #24. Bill’s steady presence and genuine belief in the power of compassion, touched all those who knew him and those who didn’t, but benefited from his humble and devoted stewardship.
As part of the generation that first welcomed television into their homes, Bill loved tv - from Perry Mason to Night Court; 60-Minutes to Star Trek - but he also held a deep appreciation for the arts. He performed in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar at Allegany Community College, played percussion in the Ali Ghan Shrine band, sang tenor in the Cresaptown United Methodist Church, as well as crafting many counted-cross-stitch pieces for his family members.
Bill embraced the simple pleasures in life, but none more so than encouraging others to rise to their potential and proudly acknowledging their accomplishments. A true gentleman and mentor, Bill was admired by many and leaves a legacy worthy of remembrance.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 25th at Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg, with visitation from 10:00 – noon with a service following with Pastor Patrick Hurder-Buhrman officiating. Mountain Lodge # 99 A.F. & A.M. will have a memorial service at 11:15.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Music Department of Cresaptown United Methodist Church in honor of Bill’s love of the church choir.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park where American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors.
