Gladys Marie Swauger, 92, of Frostburg, passed away on April 20, 2023 in the home built for her by her husband. It was her wish to be at home.
Born on August 9, 1930 in Frostburg, she was the daughter of John Olin and Grace Viola Winebrenner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil C. Swauger in March, 1992. Also preceding were her sisters, Bertha (Carl) Snyder; Rita (George) Bennett; Pearl Winebrenner; and brothers John (Mary) Winebrenner and Albert (Marie) Winebrenner. Gladys was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
Gladys lived her 92 years in Frostburg. She attended and graduated from St. Michael School and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church all her life.
Gladys is survived by four daughters, Patricia (Jim) Malloy; Linda (Greg) Conner; B. Marlene (Bert) Mason; Sharon (Ronald) Gaumer; and one son, Timothy Swauger.
She is survived by ten grandchildren, Kim (Pat) King; Amy Malloy; Eric (Shannon) Smith; Stacey (Rick) Vance; Laura (Tom) Breighner; Angela (Matt) Eyer; David (Hannah) Mason; Jason (Lisa) Gaumer; Jeffrey (Talesa) Gaumer; and Colton Swauger.
Also surviving are twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, including Rose Mary Snyder, who checked in on mom often.
Mom was a child of the depression era and was needed to help the family. Working with her mother, mom cleaned hotel rooms at the Hotel Gunter in Frostburg for some time. As a young adult, mom also worked at the Celanese Corporation.
When a handsome young man named Cecil caught her eye, the two quickly decided to join hands and hearts in marriage and began their family. Dad called Mom "babe," and Mom called Dad "hon" all their years together.
Mom was the typical homemaker, content to raise their five children in the beautiful home dad built for her with his own hardworking hands. Coming from having very little in her childhood, she took great pride in always having the house spotless and tidy and very nicely decorated. This was her mansion on earth, built for her by the man who loved her the most; and this was where she stayed for over 30 years after dad passed away. She never wanted for anything more. God has now called mom to the heavenly mansion He prepared for her. We are sure that dad was waiting to show her the way. Separated for so long, mom and dad are together again.
Friends will be received at Sowers Funeral Home, 60 W. Main Street, in Frostburg on Monday, April 24, 2023 from 10 am to 12 noon, with services following at the funeral home with Father Eric Gauchat, OFM Cap. presiding. Internment will take place at Frostburg Memorial Park.
