James A. Malloy

March 28, 1948 — May 22, 2024

James A. Malloy, 76, of Cumberland passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at Peace Healthcare Mountain City Center surrounded by his wife, daughters and brother.

Born in Frostburg, MD on March 28, 1948, he was the son of the late Lawrence and E. Jane (Hanna) Malloy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Pearl Rowe Commons.

Jim was a graduate of Beall High School in 1966. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge in 1970, he began his career at The Kelly-Springfield Tire Company for 17 years, Betz Paper Chemical Company, Westvaco Paper Mill for 17 years, The Bowler in LaVale, and White Oaks Bowling Lanes.

Jim had been a parishioner of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Frostburg, St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Cresaptown, and SS. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Cumberland.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of almost 56 years, Patricia (Swauger), his daughters Kimberly King and husband Pat, Amy Malloy and fiancé Ron McKenney; grandchildren Robyn, Erin and husband Jay, Jeremy and wife Phoebbe, and Olivia; twin brother Larry Malloy; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jim loved baseball and football, playing on the Kelly-Springfield softball team and several bowling leagues. He enjoyed volunteering with the youth bowling leagues at the Bowler and the Special Olympics bowling events where he was well-loved by all the youth bowlers.

Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed taking his family on excursions to Altoona on the weekends, amusement parks, reading night-time stories, hiking, playing badminton and chess. His grandchildren saw him in the stands enjoying their school events, band concerts, bowling matches and football games in both Maryland and Ohio. Jim will be greatly missed by many for his warm banter, friendly sarcasm, kind words and wise sayings, including “yes, dear,” “a clean car runs better,” “use a little WD40 on that,” “this is a can-do situation,” “main thing is…don’t get excited,” “aim for the second arrow,” and “team work makes the dream work” to name a few, and hearing him recite a quote from one of his favorite movies, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care and friendship shown by: Drs. Haas and Nelson and staff of UPMC HVI; Dr. Bielec and staff of UPMC Wound Care; Dr. Mareedu and staff of UPMC Nephrology and Outpatient Dialysis Center; Dr. Jackson and staff of UPMC Plastic Surgery; Dr. Allaway and staff of Urology Associates; Dr. Dey and staff of Neurology and Pain Management; Dr. Manandhar and staff of UPMC Endocrinology; UPMC Western Maryland medical staff, hospital staff and greeters; Peace Healthcare Mountain City Center medical and nursing staff, as well as the staff of the offices, maintenance, laundry, housekeeping, dietary, therapy, and transport; and finally, Fr.
