CUMBERLAND- James Phillip Ruppert, Sr. 85, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at UPMC Western Maryland surrounded by his family. James was the last surviving member of his family. Born on November 28, 1935, he was the son of the late Aaron J. and Marion E. Ruppert. He is also preceded in death by a sister Elizabeth Anne (Bettie) Jones.
Jim graduated from Allegany High School in 1955 and he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 serving his country until 1961. He was stationed in New York State, Biloxi Mississippi, Keesler Air Force Base, and Wakkanai Air Station in Wakkanai, Japan. Jim worked at Speelman's Ice Cream during high school and after the Air Force he worked at the Kelly Springfield Tire Co. from 1961 until the Kelly closed its doors in 1987. Afterward, he worked at the Luke Mill and he worked for Sowers Funeral Home for many years. Jim was a member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club, American Legion Farrady Post 24, and St. Patrick’s Church.
Jim enjoyed golfing the Sunday Scrambler at Maplehurst Country Club, and golfing at Cumberland Country Club, and at Fore Sisters. He also enjoyed walking, fishing, attending lunch with former classmates, and playing with his great-grandchildren, and playing frisbee with his grand- dog Evie. Jim was a General Class Amateur Radio Operator
. He is survived by son, James Phillip Ruppert, Jr., LaVale, daughters, Jacqueline Sue Wisenberg, Greenville, TN; and Kimberly Lynn Daum and her husband Thomas Christopher Daum, Cresaptown, niece, Donna Delauter, grandchildren, Christopher A. Daum, Jamie L. Daum, Alyssa R. Varnadoe, and great-grandchildren, Faith L. Varnadoe, Case R. Varnadoe, and Ava G. Daum.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Father James Watson officiating.
Interment will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery. American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the cemetery.
