With sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of William “Billy” Francis Hughes, who left us on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born October 4, 1946. Mr. Hughes was the son of the late Jane Leake Hughes and Michael F. (Deuce) Hughes.
Billy attended Beall High School and was a lifetime member of Saint Michaels Church which is now Divine Mercy Parish. He was a dedicated employee of Winner Brothers Coal Company for 40 years. Running a bulldozer did not seem like work to him, he loved it. He was also a skilled masonry worker. Billy enjoyed camping with friends and family. He was an avid hunter and some of his favorites to hunt were raccoon, squirrel, deer, and morel mushrooms. He also enjoyed his salmon fishing trips to Michigan with his friends. He and his wife, Sally, loved spending time in the home they took much pride in. He was always doing yard work and maintained a garden for many years. They used their lovely home to host their family for Sunday dinners where they spent time with their beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Billy is survived by his loving wife of 61 years: Sarah (Sally) Winters Hughes; his two sons: Michael F. Hughes and significant other Beth and Bryan W. Hughes; his five grandchildren: Michelle E. Hughes, Taylor Hughes Broadwater and husband Andrew, Zachary Hughes, Brant Hughes and wife Lawren and Sage Hughes; his two great grandsons: Brevyn and Maddux Broadwater; two step great-grandsons: Noah and Bailey Broadwater; one great-granddaughter is expected in August; his two brothers: John P. Hughes, James L. (Jim) Hughes and two sisters: Jane Rita Hughes and Mary L. Hughes Trap and husband Joe along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at Sowers Funeral Home, 60 West Main Street Frostburg, MD 21532 on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. A Memorial Service will begin at 6:00 P.M. with Father Scott Kady officiating.
