Marilou Sowers

Marilou Hafer ( Mattingly) Sowers, 85 of Frostburg, went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, November 19, 2020. Marilou was born in Frostburg and was the daughter of the late Frank Ambrose and Pearl (Hafer) Mattingly. She was also preceded in death by her husband Lowell M. Sowers, Jr. Marilou was a 1953 graduate of Beall High School and a 1957 graduate of Drexel University ,majoring in Retail Management. She met the love of her life, Lowell while riding on the train to Philadelphia. He was traveling to Wharton Business School and she was traveling back to Drexel. After her graduation, they married and lived in Philadelphia for two years , returning to Frostburg in 1959 to start their family and businesses. Lowell opened his accounting office and together they owned and operated Sowers Funeral Home. Lowell passed away during heart surgery in 1974 and Marilou continued operating the funeral home. Marilou was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and her church was a very important part of her life. She was very active in her community and was a member in many organizations including, American Legion Farrady Post 24 Auxiliary, American Association of University Woman, Frostburg Garden Club, Frostburg Business and Professional Association, Soroptimist Club, and Maryland State Funeral Directors Association. She loved spending time with her family and flower gardening, She enjoyed greeting everyone who came to the funeral home and knowing all of them by name. She also enjoyed getting together with classmates and going out to dinner. She is survived by daughter Ann Zimmerman and husband Dr. Walter Zimmerman, sons, Alan Sowers and wife Lisa, and Eric Sowers and wife Dina; grandchildren, Laura Harden and husband Thomas, Christopher Sowers and wife Ashley, Dr. Kyle Zimmerman, Jared Zimmerman, Erika Van Meter and husband Josh, and Alexa Sowers; great-granddaughter Lexi Harden, and Marilou's companion for many years James Rupert, Sr. Family and friends will be received at Sowers Funeral Home on Tuesday November 24, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Diane Smith officiating. Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Donations in Marilou’s memory may be sent to Salem United Church of Christ, 78 South Broadway, Frostburg, Md 21532. May you now Rest in Peace, mom, we love you and we will miss you.
