Mary Inez Carter Sunrise 9-27-1940 – Sunset 5-12-2020

Mary Inez Carter departed this life on Tuesday, May 12th at 2:40 a.m. after a brief illness. She was born in Frostburg, Maryland on September 27th, 1940 and Mary was the eldest child of Chester Leroy Carter, Sr. and Dorothy (Davis) Carter. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Ethel Mae (Hauser) Carter, and by her brother, Gilbert A. Carter, Moncks Corner, SC. Mary was educated in the Alleghany County Public School System in Frostburg, Maryland and she attended Lincoln Elementary School, Carver High School in Cumberland, Maryland and after school desegregation in 1955 Mary attended Beall High School where she graduated in 1958. She worked at various jobs until she moved to New York City to find more meaningful work. New York City’s Health and Hospital Corporation employed Mary and she began her career as a nurse’s aide at Bellevue Hospital. She worked her way up through the ranks from nurse’s aide to licensed practical nurse and then became a registered nurse. Nursing was the job of her dreams as she had a caregiver’s heart. In order for her to advance in nursing she attended Manhattan College to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing. Employed at Bellevue for 40 years where she served as a nursing supervisor until her retirement. Mary was a member of Allen A.M.E.Cathedral in Jamaica, New York where she faithfully attended the 6:30 am service every Sunday. She loved to travel, (especially cruising), shop, share with her senior friends at McDonald’s where they ate breakfast together every morning. Mary loved McDonald’s coffee! She was also a very generous person and she would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it! She is survived by two siblings, her brother, Chester Leroy Carter, Jr., Laurelton, NY; Sister, Rev. Connie E. Usher, Ridge, NY, Three sisters-in-law, Octavia Funn Carter, Laurelton, NY, Jerry Lee Carter, Rosedale, NY, Yvonne Carter, Moncks Corner, SC.; one brother-in-law, Leonard Usher; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, many friends and former co-workers. Mary will be greatly missed from this life but we know that she is happy in her eternal rest. Rest in peace our sister and friend. We love you.
